PRAIRIE FILMS 1989 - 1999

Six acclaimed documentaries.

The history, culture and peoples of the

Northern Great Plains from

First Light Films International.

From  1989 to 1999, Tim Schwab and Christina Craton produced a series of documentary films which chronicle the history, culture and people of the Northern Great Plains.  Their working partnership, First Light Films International, based in South Dakota, was committed to creating documentaries that presented an inclusive, progressive view of life on the prairies and were rooted in the traditions and landscape of the region. Winners of numerous festival awards and broadcast on television around the world, six of their best-known films are presented here in a single collection for the first time, along with additional credits, historical documentation and study materials.

These films document the history and culture of the Northern Plains, and in a larger sense, trace the transformation of North American society from Native times through frontier expansion, immigration, industrialization, and urbanization to the ecological challenges of the present. Taken together as a body of work, they create a portrait of North American history, directly addressing issues of ethnicity, race, multiculturalism, assimilation, and the environment while capturing the beauty and solitude of one of the continent’s most haunting and least understood regions.
